ICPD: Man had BAC four times legal limit prior to crashing car
Iowa City Police say a man involved in a car accident on Monday had a blood alcohol content more than four times the legal limit to drive.
The accident took place a little after noon at the intersection of Highway 6 and Broadway Street. Police say Cody Joens, 27, of Amber Lane, had wrecked his Ford Focus, then tried to drive away but the car was disabled from the crash.
When officers arrived, they say Joens showed multiple signs of intoxication, failed field sobriety testing and admitted to drinking prior to driving. He refused preliminary breath testing but a later DataMaster registered his BAC at .347.
Joens, who pleaded guilty to an Operating While Intoxicated charge in Linn County in 2016, now faces a 2nd Offense OWI charge. If convicted, he could be sentenced to two years in jail.
