University Heights fires police chief; reasoning still unclear
University Heights has fired its police chief, though the reasons are not yet clear.
Mayor Louise From on Monday told KCRG it was a personnel matter, saying Kris Lyon was fired after a vote by the city council on March 6 “without cause and for no specific reason.” City documents show the council met in closed session at the end of that meeting for an employee-related matter but From has not explained the reasoning behind the firing.
He had been on administrative leave since Jan. 19. The reasons behind that decision were also never explained.
Sgt. Nate Petersen has been serving as interim chief since.
Lyon was appointed chief on Aug. 8 after serving as interim chief for roughly six months following the retirement of Ken Stanley. He was part of a lawsuit filed last year by a former officer, Jake Schmitz, who claimed he was wrongly terminated. The two sides settled in September.
