Man arrested for retrieving a loaded handgun during argument at Coralville park
Police say a Coralville man is in custody after he pointed a loaded handgun at a teen and a young girl during an argument at a local park.
The alleged incident took place a little before 6:30 Sunday evening on Northland Circle, on the east end of North Ridge Park. That’s when the 17-year-old and Charles Ruth, 59, of Northland Circle, got into a verbal argument.
Police say at some point, Ruth retrieved a .380-caliber handgun and loaded it. The argument continued and Ruth allegedly told the teen he would “put you in the ground.” The teen, who was holding a four-year-old girl at the time, then left.
But police say Ruth then lifted the gun and pointed it at the teen as he walked away.
Ruth is now charged with Assault While Displaying a Deadly Weapon and two counts of Child Endangerment. In total, he could be sentenced to six years in prison, if convicted on all counts.
