IC woman arrested after drunken incident with autistic child

An Iowa City woman has been arrested after police say she drunkenly assaulted her autistic child.

Officers were called to an address on Whispering Prairie Avenue about 7:10 p.m. Thursday on a report of a mother holding her child down. When officers arrived, they say the child and his mother - Joni Reed, 33, of the Western Hills Mobile Estates manufactured housing community - had been separated.

However, police say the child had bruising to his forehead above his left eye, general pain to his head and scrapes on his arms. The alleged assault also took place in front of Reed's two other children, ages 11 and 2.

Upon talking with Reed, she allegedly admitted to drinking vodka and provided a BAC of .174 on a preliminary breath test.

Reed is charged with one count of Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury and two counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all charges, she faces up to nine years in prison.
