Officials identify suspect in Thursday shootout near Atalissa

Police have identified the man who allegedly fired several rounds over three incidents near Interstate 80 on Thursday.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation on Friday identified the man arrested as Charles Johnston, 60. Police say Johnston is charged with Attempted Murder and Assault on a Peace Officer with a Dangerous Weapon, charges carrying up to 30 years in prison.
The Iowa State Patrol responded to a 911 call about 3:30 p.m. Thursday of shots fired at the rest stop along westbound I-80 east of exit 265, the Atalissa exit. By the time officers got there, they say Johnston had driven west and gotten off at that exit, firing more shots while at the BP gas station.
The state patrol says troopers caught up with him on County Road X46 - Atalissa Road - where they exchanged shots with him before taking him into custody. They say no troopers, civilians, nor Johnston sustained injuries during the shootout.
The DCI is handling the investigation due to the officers’ involvement.
