Iowa's U.S. Senators say they've written a letter to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs seeking answers to multiple questions after a report about a neurosurgeon hired at the Iowa City VA Hospital despite having malpractice claims against him.

Republicans Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst say they sent the letter on Monday to Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin, inquiring into the report by USA Today. The newspaper reported on Sunday neurosurgeon John Henry Schneider was hired by the Iowa City VA Hospital despite having more than a dozen malpractice claims against him.

His medical license was revoked by the state of Wyoming after a patient of Schneider's died. The newspaper states patients of Schneider's in Iowa City have also had issues resulting from his surgery.

Grassley and Ernst in the letter ask several questions, including any "incorrect guidance" officials received allowing Schneider to be hired, what steps are being taken to determine how many physicians have been illegally hired, and what actions the VA will take if other illegal hires are found?

The newspaper report claims Schneider's case in Iowa City is just one example of a larger problem nationwide with VA hospitals.

Due to the report, VA officials determined Schneider's hiring was illegal and planned to fire him, but he resigned on Wednesday.
