At its core, it's a simple greeting between inhabitants of two University of Iowa buildings. But the UI's "Wave" from fans in Kinnick Stadium to children at the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital has become much more.

On Monday, the Laureus World Sports Awards announced the Wave has been nominated for the sports moment of the year and is one of six finalists for the honor. The awards honor a person or group in sports who help "bridge the gaps in society and change the way people look at the world."

The Wave involves the football fans inside Kinnick Stadium waving to the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital and the patients and families inside across the street at the end of the first quarter of Iowa football games. It's since spread to include the coaches, players and officials on the field and has even been adopted during some road games.

The public can vote on the awards by going to www.mylaureus.com through the end of December.
