An attempted murder charge has been dismissed for a woman accused of throwing her newborn child in the trash.

Ashley Hautzenrader, 24, of Davenport, agreed to plead to a newly-filed charge of Neglect or Abandonment of a Dependent Person on Friday as part of a plea deal. She also agreed to plead guilty to the original charge of Child Endangerment in exchange for prosecutors dismissing the attempted murder charge.

Hautzenrader is accused of first trying to flush the newborn down a toilet before wrapping him or her in a pillowcase and placing the baby in a trashcan after giving birth on Mother’s Day 2016. She told investigators she didn’t know she was pregnant when she went to the hospital that day and thought the child was dead when it didn’t cry after being born.

Hospital personnel eventually found the child and rescued him or her. Court records indicate the child survived but is not in Hautzenrader’s custody. An older daughter of Hautzenrader’s has also been removed from her custody.

Had she been convicted on the attempted murder charge, she would have faced up to 25 years in prison. Instead, she faces a maximum of 12 years in prison when she's sentenced. A sentencing date was not immediately set.
