Weipert mulling run for Iowa Secretary of State
Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert has announced he is considering taking a run at Iowa Secretary of State.

In a Sunday news release, Weipert said he is organizing an exploratory committee to look into the idea.

“I’ve been encouraged to run by people from all over the state,” Weipert said in the release. “So I might as well say I’m considering it.”

Weipert has been vocal in his opposition to Secretary of State Paul Pate’s voter ID bill and says there’s wide agreement with auditors of both political parties that a change in office is needed.

Pate, a Republican, is in his second stint in office, first serving from 1995-1999 and with his most recent term starting in 2015. His term runs through 2019.

Weipert, a Democrat, was first elected Johnson County Auditor in 2012 after having served three years on the Tiffin city council. He says he has not yet selected the members of his exploratory committee.
