Iowa women aware of, but not afraid of, Hilton history
When the Iowa women’s basketball team takes on Iowa State on Wednesday, the only people alive the last time the Hawkeyes won in Hilton Coliseum on Iowa’s bench will be the coaches.

This year’s squad thinks they can change that.

It’s been nearly 30 years – Dec. 17, 1989, to be exact – since the Iowa women won in Hilton. The players say they’re aware of that streak but they’re not dwelling on it.

“Growing up in Iowa, I’ve always heard the hype around Hilton and I’ve been to a couple of games there, so I know it gets pretty loud,” sophomore guard Makenzie Meyer said. “But we’re trying to treat it like any other away game and just trying to emulate their environment (in practice).

“It’s going to be our first big road test, so we’ll be ready to go.”

That’s not to say the series hasn’t been tight; Iowa State leads by just three games in the 47-game history of the rivalry. And despite only two of 11 players on the Hawkeye roster being native Iowans, head coach Lisa Bluder says the players learn quickly how intense the rivalry is.

“We only have two Iowa kids on our roster but we have three Iowa coaches on our roster and I think our players know how much this means to us,” Bluder said. “I think they know how much it means to Hawk fans. And our players love our fans. They really do. They genuinely appreciate them and want to make them proud. They know the Cy-Hawk Series is for real and they know how valuable it is.”

Junior guard Tania Davis called playing in Hilton two years ago “eye-opening” but said they have to treat it like any other game.

Wednesday’s game tips off at 6:30 p.m. It can be seen on Cyclones.TV.
