Economic development officials in Iowa City are asking permission to hire a retail consultant to fill the empty storefronts along the Highway 1 and Highway 6 corridor.

Economic Development coordinator Wendy Ford says city staff has already held meetings with two retail consultant firms to discuss possible solutions. She says they've also talked with Dubuque officials, who recently worked with both firms and who gave some insight into the strengths of each.

As part of the department's fiscal 2019 budget, staff has requested up to $50,000 per year for three years to pay a consultant. The firm would then do much of the heavy lifting, with Ford saying the city would be asked to provide general direction to the firm, who would then conduct most of the negotiations with businesses.

Ford says while they've spoken with two firms, if the city council approves the funding, they would put out a Request for Proposals and would consider others, as well.
