Chad Cermak, owner of Cermak Automotive, has been sentenced to probation for allegedly calling a customer a terrorist.

The 47-year-old who lives on Cumberland Lane in Iowa City entered an Alford plea on Monday, meaning he doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction. He had been charged with 3rd Degree Harassment and could have been sentenced to up to 30 days in jail.

Police say the incident took place the afternoon of Jan. 8 at the auto service business on Gilbert Court. Cermak is accused of making “multiple and repeated harassing statements” to a customer, statements which included “Are you Muslim?”, “Are you a suicide bomber?”, and “Are you going to blow up my place of business?”

The customer allegedly tried to end the conversation multiple times but says Cermak continued to repeat the comments.

Court records show Cermak will also receive a deferred judgment, meaning his conviction will be expunged if he successfully completes the terms of his six-month probation.
