Two charged in burglary, shots fired incident at IC rental store
Two people have been arrested in an alleged burglary that ended with gunfire at an Iowa City rental store.
Police say the incident took place at Aaron’s Rental at the Iowa City Marketplace’s west end. A little before 4 p.m. Monday, Sara Schrader, 27, and Michael Shapcott, 29, who live together on Spruce Street, entered the store, with Schrader allegedly going behind the employee counter and taking cash from the register.
An employee then interrupted Schrader and she left the business, getting into Schapcott’s waiting vehicle. Both are then accused of firing multiple rounds at the store, with police saying at least two shots went inside the store. They say during a later investigation, they found several shell casings on the ground in the area and multiple bullet holes on the side of the building.
There is no indication anyone was hurt in the burglary.
Schrader and Shapcott are each charged with 2nd Degree Burglary and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted, each faces up to 20 years in prison.
