Two arrested in several thefts at IC storage facility; third suspect remains at large
Two people have been arrested in a string of break-ins at a storage facility on Iowa City’s far southeastern edge.
Blake Kotteman, 35, of 5th Avenue Place in Coralville, and Dustin Stucker, 33, of Olde Hickory Road in Coralville, were taken into custody last week on several burglary charges.
Police say the pair, along with a third, as-yet unidentified person, were observed trying to open the gate to the Scott Six Storage facility on Commerce Drive early the morning of Sept. 1. When an officer arrived on scene, the three had allegedly already made their way inside the facility but fled in a pickup upon seeing the officer.
Police say a review of surveillance video from the facility showed the three men using a grinding wheel to cut the locks off seven storage units.
Police eventually stopped Kotteman’s pickup and he allegedly admitted to being at the storage facility, saying he thought he was helping Stucker retrieve tools from his unit. He says he fled because he didn’t want to be handcuffed.
Kotteman and Stucker each face seven counts of 3rd Degree Burglary and one of 5th Degree Criminal Mischief. The burglary charges carry the possibility of up to 35 years in prison.
