Two area women have been charged after getting a case of the munchies. The problem was they apparently took their snacks from strangers’ apartments.

Officers were dispatched about 1:45 a.m. Friday to the 900 block of Iowa Avenue after a 911 hang-up. Upon arrival, they say they found Mary Mattes, 22, of Goldfinch Drive in Tiffin, and Skylar Mitchell, 21, of 6th Avenue in Coralville, outside in the grass.

Police say each woman showed multiple signs of intoxication, with Mitchell admitting to drinking earlier in the night. Mitchell registered a BAC of .181 on a preliminary breath test, while Mattes’ PBT returned a BAC of .183.

Neither woman could explain to police why they were at the apartment complex and officers say there was a trail of food from the kitchen to their “landing spot in the lawn.”

A resident of one apartment told police the pair were inside multiple apartments, had caused a mess inside the building, and possibly damaged a door.

Mattes and Mitchell were each charged with Public Intoxication – a simple misdemeanor – and placed under arrest. Police say a search of Mitchell’s purse post-arrest discovered a container with a green leafy substance officers say was consistent with marijuana. While Mitchell denied having ever seen the container before, she acknowledged the purse was hers.

Mitchell faces an additional charge of 1st Offense Possession of a Controlled Substance and the possibility of one year in jail.
