A Sunday night car crash outside Iowa City Police Department headquarters led to the arrest of an Iowa City man who registered a blood alcohol concentration over four times the legal limit for driving…although he told officers he felt fine.

An off-duty ICPD officer reported the crash at the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp on East Washington Street just before 10:30 Sunday night. Arriving officers noticed 37-year-old Michael Flippo of South Summit Street leaning against his Chevy Venture. He showed multiple signs of intoxication, and had to steady himself against his car and hold his head in his hands in order to take the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. A walk-and-turn test was skipped because Flippo was unable to stand up on his own or maintain his balance. He provided a BAC of .343 on a portable Breathalyzer test and .351 on a Datamaster.

Flippo told police he’d been drinking at Gabe’s and wanted to drive home because he felt “okay”.

Flippo is charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
