A “blessing of the land” ceremony has been held at the future site of a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Coralville.

Mercy of Iowa City is working in conjunction with Kindred Healthcare of Louisville, Kentucky on the $7.5 million facility, which will be built on Heartland Drive just west of Mercy Coral West Health Center.

Kindred will manage the day-to-day operations of the new hospital. Subject to several regulatory and other approvals, Kindred expects ground to be broken in April with an expected opening in the second quarter of 2020. The new hospital will care for adults recovering from conditions such as stroke, neurological disease, injury to the brain or spinal cord and other long-term illnesses or injuries.

The project has received Certificate of Need approval from the Iowa State Health Facilities Council.

Tuesday’s blessing was conducted by Bishop Thomas Zinkula of the Davenport Diocese.
