A Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy aided in a roadside birth early Wednesday morning.

The sheriff’s office says deputies responded to the intersection of Highway 1 and 520th Street just after 12:30 Wednesday morning for a report of a woman in labor. Shortly before the first deputy arrived the mother delivered the baby inside her vehicle. Deputy Doran Williams arrived within minutes of the delivery and observed that the infant was not breathing adequately. Williams moved the umbilical cord and was able to help the baby start breathing.

The baby and parents were transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where they are all reportedly doing well.
