City High students staged a walkout Friday to mark the sixth anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre.

An estimated 100 students walked out of classes around 2:30pm and marched to the Ped Mall, where they read the names of the 20 children and six teachers killed at the Newtown, Connecticut school on December 14th, 2012.

The event was sponsored by Students Against School Shootings, which held a similar walkout last April.  That event saw an estimated 30 students march to Van Allen Hall, joining thousands of other high school and junior high students around the country who marched out of classes on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine massacre in Colorado. Van Allen Hall is one of two sites on the University of Iowa campus where graduate student Gang Lu shot and killed five people before taking his own life.

City High officials sent messages to parents saying the students will be given an unexcused absence, but the absence can be excused with the parents’ approval.
