Hy-Vee pharmacies are placing new restrictions on opioid prescriptions.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the grocery store chain will no longer refill prescriptions of Schedule III or Schedule IV drugs or fill subsequent prescriptions of Schedule II drugs more than 72 hours early without a doctor’s permission.

The policy began on January 1st.

The policy also prohibits Hy-Vee from accepting coupons for such prescriptions from the mobile app GoodRx, which tracks prescription prices between various pharmacies.

Federal guidelines prohibit refills for Schedule II controlled substances. Instead, a new prescription must be issued each time. Schedule III and Schedule IV controlled substances can only be refilled five times within a six-month span.
