Recent inclement weather closed Iowa City schools multiple days over the last week, but the school district isn’t ready to lengthen the school year quite yet.

Despite the recent closings, the district is still on pace to reach the minimum number of instructional hours required by the state. Iowa school districts generally schedule extra days in anticipation of inclement weather cancellations, delays and early dismissals. As of this weekend the Iowa City Community School District is still 27 hours ahead of the minimum 1,080 hours required by the state. But with snow in the forecast Sunday night into Monday and dangerous cold expected next week, more missed class time is likely.

The current Iowa City school year is set to end on May 30th, but days could be added to make up for lost time.

Even if the district stays on pace to reach the 1,080 hour minimum, it could still add extra days to the school year if district officials determine its recommend curriculum would not be met.
