Police say the victim of an Iowa City burglary was able to identify the perpetrator because he’d had a conversation with him moments before he committed the act.

Arrest records state Anthony Alexander, 19, of the Regency Mobile Home Community, burglarized a residence in the 700 block of Michael Street on Dec. 29.

According to a criminal complaint, Alexander had spoken to the man just outside the residence while he and his girlfriend were leaving. The man noted he specifically remembered locking the door before leaving.

Police say when they arrived at the scene, the door was unlocked and a window screen had been removed. They believe that’s how Alexander gained access to the home, allegedly stealing a TV.

Officers were able to lift several fingerprints from the scene and matched them to Alexander. The man who had spoken to Alexander also later identified him in a photo lineup.

Alexander is now charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, a class D felony carrying up to five years in prison.
