A Davenport man faces multiple charges after he allegedly tried to smother a woman with a pillow at her Iowa City apartment.

Police say the incident took place at The Rise Apartments on South Linn Street about 11:40 Thursday night. That’s where Marquies Angel, 21, allegedly began assaulting the woman for reasons not made clear in arrest reports. But police say he struck the woman, causing pain and bruising and knocking her down.

Angel is then accused of placing a pillow over the woman’s face and holding it down to prevent her breathing, at one point also bending one of her fingers backward.

The woman was able to free herself and tried to call for medical help but police say Angel took her phone away.

He was arrested early Friday morning on charges of Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow Causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. He faces more than six years in prison if convicted on all counts.
