Using counterfeit currency twice at the same store within a 10-minute span has led to the arrest of a North Liberty man.

Arrest records indicate police were called to the Casey’s on West Zeller Street about 10:30 p.m. Monday after a black male had used a counterfeit bill. According to the store clerk, the male had been at the store about 10 minutes earlier and had used a counterfeit bill during that transaction, as well.

Officers contacted other law enforcement agencies and say they also contacted other area convenience stores, with a clerk at Gasby’s on Hawkeye Drive saying a counterfeit bill had been attempted to be used at that store a few minutes earlier. That clerk gave police a description of the man’s vehicle and police in Coralville located it parked in a fire zone at 2801 Commerce Drive.

The driver of the vehicle was then identified as Rasean Yates, 18, of Savannah Drive, and the clerks from the gas stations positively identified him as the man who had used the counterfeit bills. Police say they also searched Yates upon finding his vehicle and discovered a baggie containing marijuana.

The amount of the counterfeit bills has not been released.

Yates now faces three counts of Forgery and one of Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to 16 years in prison.
