The second of the two finalists for the University of Iowa’s vice president for research will make a campus visit on Thursday, hosting an open forum at the Iowa Memorial Union.

The UI on Wednesday announced Craig Svensson will interview for the role, vacated by Dan Reed in September 2017 when he suffered a “health event.” Reed later took a position at the University of Utah.

Svensson is currently at Purdue University, where he serves as dean emeritus and professor of medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology in Purdue’s College of Pharmacy. As part of his Thursday campus visit, he’ll take part in an open forum in the Iowa Theatre at the IMU from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Last week, Texas A&M University College of Medicine executive associate vice president for research J. Martin Scholtz interviewed for the position.

Iowa’s vice president for research is slightly modified from when Reed held the position, with UI President Bruce Harreld shaving off an economic development component and creating a new position: chief innovation officer. Jon Darsee was hired for that role last fall.

Harreld is expected to announce a hire shortly after Svensson completes his visit. Graduate College dean John Keller is currently serving as the vice president on an interim basis.
