Swinging at and striking an officer following a domestic incident has landed an Iowa City woman in jail.

Police say they were called to a reported domestic disturbance in the 1800 block of Deforest Avenue a little before 7:30 Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, they say Jill Bushman, 55, showed signs of being intoxicated and was “belligerent, combative, and uncooperative” with them.

As they tried to investigate the initial incident, police say Bushman refused to answer questions, then got in an officer’s face, yelling at him. She also allegedly tried to re-engage the other person involved in the domestic dispute, pushing officers out of the way when they tried to stop her. It’s at that point she allegedly began swinging at officers, striking one and leaving a scratch on his face.

Officers say she continued to resist while being placed under arrest, with officers having to take her to the ground in order to place her in handcuffs.

Bushman is charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations Causing Bodily Injury and Interference with Official Acts. She could be sentenced to more than two years in jail if convicted on both counts.

There is no indication any charges have been filed in relation to the initial incident.
