No injuries reported in house fire in 700 block of Kirkwood Avenue

Fire officials in Iowa City say crews took less than 20 minutes to douse a house fire on Kirkwood Avenue on Thursday morning.
Crews were called to 740 Kirkwood Avenue about 6:15 a.m. after neighbors saw a fire in the home’s back porch. Firefighters arrived on-scene in about five minutes and saw the blaze coming from the back of the two-story home, bringing it under control in approximately 15 minutes.
In a news release, battalion chief Zach Hickman says the fire was contained to the first floor and basement of the home. However, smoke damage is reported throughout the residence and officials estimate damage to the house at $70,000.
When crews arrived, they say the home was empty and no injuries – neither firefighter nor civilian – were reported.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
