A contractor who has been battling the University of Iowa over unpaid work on the football team’s practice field for over six years has been awarded $2.3 million.

A&P Samuels Group of Des Moines accused the University of breach of contract for its work on the facility, and a Johnson County Jury agreed, awarding the contractor $2.6 million plus interest last month before it was trimmed down to $2.3 million.

The Samuels Group sought the settlement money quickly by having Board of Regents bank accounts garnished, but District Court Judge Paul Miller agreed with the UI’s contention that they’re still within an appeal window, and being a state entity are immune to such actions.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the UI requested a new trial on Friday, saying the court failed to admit an exhibit they believe is relevant to the case, and instructing jurors improperly. No order has been issued relating to that request.
