A Cedar Rapids man was taken into custody after attempting to pass a stolen check at a Coralville business.

Arrest records indicate that 27 year-old Zachary Allen of 33rd Avenue Southwest was one of a possible group of shoplifters called in to police by store security at Kohl’s department store on Commerce Drive Monday afternoon.

According to the report, Allen wrote out a check and attempted to pass it, but the bank reported the account as closed due to the theft of checks.

Allen allegedly filled out the check, signing the owner’s name.

He was taken into custody and charged with forgery, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison if convicted.

A second suspect, identified as 33-year-old Brent Munson, was found in the parking lot of the store sitting in a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu that had been reported stolen several weeks ago. Munson, whose address wasn’t given, claimed that the owner gave him the car to drive, but a witness told the officer that Munson has had the vehicle for several days.

Munson was charged with second degree Theft, a class D felony also punishable by up to five years in prison if convicted.
