The Solon Fire Department has received a significant donation in its efforts to build a new fire station.

The department, officially known as the Solon Tri-Township Fire Department, received a $15,000 donation from the Solon Beef Days Committee Wednesday night. The department is looking to replace its current firehouse, which was built in the 1950’s. According to the group’s web site, the original facility was designed when the department had just 25 members and five trucks and only ran approximately 50 calls a year.

The Solon Fire Department now has 40 members and responds to approximately 400 calls a year.

Expansion at the current firehouse is not feasible because of the expansion of the downtown area around the current facility on Main Street. Storage space is also an issue. Some items must currently be stored outside.

A new firehouse would alleviate those problems, as well as provide more on-site parking for firefighter volunteers.
