A Benton County man faces multiple charges after allegedly leading Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase near Oxford, then attacking officers.

Police were notified of a driver all over the road on eastbound Interstate 80 near Black Hawk Avenue just after 11pm Friday. A Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy located the vehicle and saw it driving erratically. Arrest records indicate the officer conducted a traffic stop, but after the vehicle stopped the driver began driving again and almost rammed the patrol car. A brief, high-speed chase ensued, eventually ending with the driver stopping on 340th Street.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Dalton Jeffrey Truesdell of Atkins, refused to comply with the officer’s commands to put his hands out or get on the ground. Instead, he allegedly punched the deputy in the head. He continued fighting until the deputy was able to deploy a taser.

Truesdell showed multiple signs of intoxication, and an almost empty bottle of rum was found inside his vehicle. He’s charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Eluding, Assault on Persons In Certain Occupations and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over three years in prison.

Truesdell has a previous pending OWI charge out of Jasper County.
