After being behind by as much as six weeks, officials say the recent stretch of weather has put the opening of Christine Grant Elementary in North Liberty back on schedule.

Earlier this year, the Iowa City Community School District announced that the opening of the school might be delayed into October or after the Christmas break. Construction crews were hampered by having to dig the foundation deeper than originally planned, and wet weather delayed pouring of footings. Muddy conditions caused heavy equipment to get stuck on several occasions.

Superintendent Stephen Murley announced at this week’s school board meeting that Bi State Contracting now believes the project will be finished in plenty of time for teachers to get moved in and set up before the first day of the school year.

The school sits on North Front Street and will hold up to 633 students.
