The Iowa City City Council has voted to repeal an outdated ordinance.

Since at least the early 70s, City Code has prohibited dancing in establishments with a liquor license without a city-issued dancing permit. The ordinance was enacted to address concerns about overcrowding in the bars and clubs, and the resulting fire hazards.

The council voted unanimously Tuesday night to repeal the ordinance, which hasn’t been enforced in recent memory.

City staff had said the inspections that are done in connection with all applications for liquor licenses address all safety concerns, thus making the ordinance redundant.
