The question of whether or not the Iowa City Community School District should have held a vote on whether or not to demolish the original Hoover Elementary will now go to the Iowa Supreme Court.

The court agreed to hear an appeal from several district parents who want to save the school, located on East Court Street, which is set to close at the end of the current school year. Per the lower court rulings, the building cannot be demolished until a non-binding referendum is put on the November 2019 general election ballot. The district plans to raze the school to clear way for expansion at nearby City High.

The school board voted to close Hoover in 2013, leading to a legal battle from parents who argued the decision went against the district’s stated policy of protecting neighborhood schools.
