Calling 9-1-1 after a downtown Iowa City nightclub confiscated his ID landed a California man behind bars Friday night.

18-year-old Mark Powers of Folsom, California called 9-1-1 just after 11:30 Friday night to report his ID had been stolen. Staff at The Summit on South Clinton Street had confiscated a fictitious Indiana driver’s license from Powers and pointed him out to a police officer who was dispatched to Powers’ call a short time later.

Powers claimed the ID was real. He confirmed the birthdate on the license, but when it was run by police nothing came back on file. Police say Powers was then unable to answer simple identity-related questions correctly.

Powers showed multiple signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking, and refused a post-arrest breath test. He’s charged with Public Intoxication, Providing False Identification Information, Possession of a Fictitious ID and Making a False Report to 9-1-1. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 15 months in jail.
