IC Man upset about girlfriend moving arrested for alleged assault

An Iowa City man was taken into custody Sunday after allegedly becoming upset at his girlfriend for a planned move.
According to arrest reports, 20 year-old Darnell Simpson of the 1100 block of Hollywood Boulevard was at the apartment of his girlfriend of 4 years in the 800 block of East College Street at approximately 3:15pm when she called authorities. She said that Simpson had hit her in the face and was running out the back entrance to the apartment.
Simpson was apprehended just outside the woman’s residence and upon questioning confirmed that the two had been arguing over “various issues,” one of which was her planning to relocate.
The woman complained of pain and swelling in her eye area and a witness corroborated the incident. Simpson’s girlfriend added that it wasn’t the first time he assaulted her, alleging that he hit her in the other eye just days ago.
Simpson was taken into custody and charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison if convicted.
