West Liberty Police assisted in the roadside birth of a child early Friday morning.

According to the department’s web site, officers were called to a woman in labor on Highway 6 just west of West Liberty just after 6:30am.

Jay Shellaberger had been driving his wife, Ali, to an Iowa City hospital when they knew they wouldn’t be able to make it in time.

Jay Shellaberger to KCRG TV-9 he pulled over into a turnoff to a field, went to the passenger side door and saw the baby’s head. Muscatine County dispatchers walked Shellaberger through the birth and told him how to tie off the umbilical cord. That’s about the time paramedics arrived on the scene.

The Shellabergers named the baby “Iris” and report she and Ali are doing well.
