A Marengo man was taken into custody for a forgery incident in Coralville two months ago.

Police say that 33-year old Randall James Grandstaff stole several business checks from a victim’s office while he was an employee there. Grandstaff allegedly presented one of the checks at the Hills Bank branch on 2nd Street on the afternoon of March 7th, cashing it for $3000.

Bank surveillance shows Grandstaff cashing the check, and he allegedly admitted to police that he cashed it, but said that his employer gave him the check. The victim denies ever issuing the check, and police had forgery affidavits on file.

The employer also stated that other stolen checks were presented at different times by two individuals he was not familiar with.

Grandstaff was taken into custody Sunday night and charged with Forgery and 2nd Degree Theft, both Class D felonies. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
