Employee charged with vandalizing IC restaurant
An Iowa City man is in custody after causing over $10,000 in damages to the restaurant he’s employed by.
Arrest records indicate that the owner of Linn Street Dive contacted police Monday at 4am on reports of vandalism. She showed the arriving officer the interior of the restaurant, which was covered in fire extinguisher chemical throughout the dining room, kitchen and cooler area. Additionally, glass windows and glass bottles had been shattered throughout the business, with vinegar and cooking oil sprayed over the walls.
Surveillance video from inside the restaurant was viewed by the owner and she recognized the vandal, 24-year-old William Hebets of the 100 block of South Dubuque Street. She told police that he’s a current employee at the restaurant.
The owner estimated cleanup costs at somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000.
A warrant was issued for Hebets’ arrest and he was picked up later that afternoon on first degree Criminal Mischief charges. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison. No motive for the crime has been revealed.
