Allegedly trying to ditch drugs after crashing his car in Iowa City has led to a Cedar Rapids man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police were called to a personal injury collision on Highway 1 West near Walmart just after 10am Friday. The driver of one of the vehicles, identified as 28-year-old Anthony Hill of 19th Street Northeast, was observed by staff of Midtown Family Restaurant throwing a backpack into an outdoor trash can. Midtown employees recovered the backpack and turned it over to police.

Inside the backpack were multiple containers with marijuana, pipes with burnt marijuana residue, a white powdery substance, and a paycheck with Hill’s name on it.

Hill admitted the backpack was his, and that it contained marijuana and methamphetamine. A bag containing meth was also found in the back of the squad car where Hill had been detained.

Hill is charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and one count of Driving While Barred. If convicted, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.

Hill has multiple previous drug convictions.
