A Coralville man who nearly caused an accident Sunday afternoon was charged with his third OWI.

Arrest records indicate that 31 year-old Robert Gatewood of 5th Street was traveling near the intersection of the Coralville Strip and Wescor Drive when he changed lanes and nearly hit a vehicle already in that lane. A traffic stop was initiated by police and Gatewood was observed with bloodshot watery eyes and impaired speech. After showing measurable impairment during field testing, Gatewood refused a PBT and Datamaster.

A check of Gatewood’s records shows his driving privileges barred until June of 2022, with 11 withdrawals in effect. His two previous OWI convictions were in Johnson County in 2016 and Washington County in 2014.

Gatewood was taken into custody and charged with OWI third or subsequent, and driving while barred as a habitual offender. If convicted on both charges, he could be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison.
