A Cedar Rapids man turned a marijuana possession charge into a felony for not telling jail officers that he had rocks of heroin hidden in his underwear.

Arrest reports indicated that 55-year-old Jeffery Brown of 29th Street Southeast was observed making an improper turn and failing to obey a traffic device while traveling in the 500 block of South Capitol Street in Iowa City. The officer who stopped Brown employed a K9 sniff of the vehicle and got a positive alert to drugs in the vehicle. A small baggy of marijuana was located on the floor of the rear passenger area, and Brown fessed up to having loose marijuana in his pockets.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and taken to the Johnson County Jail.

While being processed, Brown was searched and informed that if he was found with drugs hidden on him, he would be charged with a felony. He denied having anything else on his person, but a strip search turned up a small baggie with several rocks of heroin in Brown’s underwear.

He now faces an additional charge of Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Institution, a Class D Felony and an additional Possession of a Controlled Substance charge, his third. If convicted on all charges, Brown could be sentenced to a maximum of eleven years in prison.
