A Cedar Rapids man who was found to be highly intoxicated was arrested early Thursday morning after an altercation with Iowa City police.

Police responded to a disturbance around 1am in the 700 block of Michael Street and found 35-year-old Cory Baxter behind the wheel of a truck with the ignition in the on position.

Authorities say they saw a holstered handgun in the center console and told Baxter not to touch it, but he went for it anyway, setting it down when, according to reports, “lethal force was displayed.” A further search discovered a concealed handgun, a revolver in his waistband and a rifle in the driver’s seat. Police allege all four weapons were loaded, and they also found marijuana on his person.

A PBT taken on Baxter after he allegedly admitted to being drunk confirmed his diagnosis, as it showed his BAC to be .345, over four times the legal limit.

Baxter faces over five years in prison if convicted on all charges, which include carrying weapons, possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and 2nd offense drunken driving.
