Two Chicago women were caught with over 30 pounds of marijuana in their car after a Tuesday night traffic stop in Iowa City.

Iowa City Police made a traffic stop on the vehicle near Dubuque Street and Taft Speedway just before 8:30pm. An officer noticed a large amount of “cover smell” coming from the car and had a police canine do a free-air sniff, which resulted in a positive alert.

A search of the vehicle turned up over 30 pounds of marijuana in the trunk. The driver, 21-year-old Gabriela Monreal, and a passenger, 22-year-old Jasmine Do, both said they were taking the car to the vehicle’s owner. They also said they knew there was marijuana in the vehicle and that they were delivering it to someone. Do also admitted to having a vape pen.

Monreal and Do are each charged with Controlled Substance Violations, Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, they each face a maximum of 11 years in prison.
