IC man blames “American flag-waving stranger” for setting off fireworks

Iowa City Police say a man tried to blame a patriotic stranger for setting off fireworks on his porch early Sunday morning.
According to police records, officers were called to an apartment building at 439 South Johnson Street just before 2:30am for a tenant on the first floor lighting fireworks. Arriving officers found 22-year-old Isaiah Kurth with his sliding door open and spent firework wrappers and casings outside. Several unused fireworks were located just inside the door.
Kurth denied setting off the fireworks, instead blaming what he called “an American flag-waving stranger” for lighting them. When officers pointed out to Kurth that several platforms were set up directly next to him, he allegedly admitted that he had been setting off the fireworks.
Kurth is charged with a violation of Iowa City’s fireworks code.
