A police chase on Interstate 80 has led to the arrest of an armed Ely man.

Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a routine traffic stop just after 10:15 Saturday night at Tall Grass Avenue and West Marengo Road near Tiffin. When a deputy tried to check on the driver, the suspect allegedly proceeded to drive through neighboring yards to escape. A chase ensued, and the driver eventually hit stop sticks set out by other law enforcement officials.

The driver continued on I-80 for another five miles on flat tires, eventually stopping near the West Branch exit. He was identified as 38-year-old Andrew Louvar of Pacific Street. Deputies say Louvar failed to obey commands and showed multiple signs of impairment. A bottle of liquor was found under the driver’s seat, and a handgun was also located inside the vehicle. Louvar registered a blood alcohol content of .199%.

Louvar was arrested and charged with Eluding, Operating While Intoxicated, and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon While Intoxicated. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of three years in prison.
