An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly striking his female partner.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of East Court Street Wednesday shortly after 7pm for a report of a woman was struck by a man after he threw her belongings out of his apartment and truck.

Arriving officers met with the person who called in the report, who directed them to the apartment of 41-year-old Justin Bonwell. The alleged victim was inside the residence and had swelling on her left eye and looked as though she’d been splattered with liquid.

The woman volunteered without being asked that Bonwell did not hit her but he threw a drink at her while they were inside the car. Bonwell stated that he has had the woman staying with him for the last few months in a romantic relationship.

Officers allege that Bonwell was highly intoxicated and verbally abusive towards officers about the woman and the officers.

A check of his records indicate that Bonwell has two domestic abuse assault convictions from 2002. He was charged with his third or subsequent, a class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison if convicted. A no-contact order was also requested by the victim.
