Iowa City Police say they received multiple calls about a North Liberty man who was confused about which car was his, leading to his arrest.

25-year-old Michael Vogel of Forest Drive Northeast first came to the attention of police after allegedly stealing a water bottle from the Benton Street Delimart just after 7:30 Thursday night. Police say Vogel attempted to leave the store without buying the water, valued at $.99, and when confronted left an invalid debit card on the counter and left the store.

Vogel was found just after 10:30pm slumped over behind the wheel of a sedan parked on the 500 block of South Clinton Street. When awakened, he was allegedly disoriented and claimed the car belonged to his mother. Police later determined the sedan did not belong to him or anyone in his family. The water bottle from Delimart was found inside, half-empty.

Police say Vogel became agitated, started arguing with officers and made numerous gestures threatening to punch the windows of the sedan. He then stopped another sedan that was driving by, presenting a threatening posture toward the occupants and claimed that was his car.

Vogel was ordered away from the vehicle and onto the ground, where he was arrested for 5th Degree Theft, Disorderly Conduct and Trespassing. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 60 days in jail.

Vogel has a lengthy criminal history. Police say they received four calls for service regarding Vogel Thursday night alone.
