Two men have been arrested after a report of car burglaries at an Iowa City trailer court.

Iowa City Police were called to the Bon Aire manufactured housing community on Highway 6 East at 5:20 Saturday morning for a report of two suspicious subjects who had knocked on a door, telling the resident they had been dropped off and needed a place to stay.

Upon officers’ arrival, a resident identified two men, 18-year-old Benjamin Rosario Cruz of Hollywood Boulevard and 21-year-old Mark Clay of the nearby Quarters apartments, as the subjects who had been trying to break into cars. Both men allegedly fled on foot.

Rosario Cruz was captured a short time later. Clay was found walking along Highway 6.

Clay was also wanted for an incident earlier that morning at the Waterfront Hy-Vee. Witnesses there say just after 2am Saturday Clay emptied the contents of a liquor bottle into a two liter bottle of ginger ale and attempted to only pay for the cost of the ginger ale. The cost of the liquor was $61.99.

Both men are charged with 3rd Degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted, they each face a maximum of 25 months in prison.

Clay also faces additional charges of Public Intoxication and 5th Degree Theft. Those charges carry a maximum punishment of 60 days in jail.
