An Illinois man was taken into custody Sunday after allegations of drunk and reckless driving along Highway 218.
Witnesses report 30-year-old David Axnix of Rock Island was heading southbound on the roadway around 1:30pm, passing cars in excess of 100 miles per hour and running them off the road.
Axnix then is accused of causing an accident by sideswiping a semi and entering the west ditch. According to witnesses, Axnix climbed out of the ditch with a beer in his hand and walked dangerously close to southbound traffic.
Upon contact, Axnix allegedly denied he was driving the wrecked vehicle, but admitted to having shots and beers with his lunch. A subsequent Datamaster test showed a blood alcohol reading of .116.
Axnix was arrested and charged with OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year.
